The Technical Stuff

Audio/Video Quality: The technical aspects almost make it to the average mark. The audio is very impressive for the amount of footage that was shot outdoors, and in addition to the lack of background nosies there's a very good balance between the cast and the ocean surroundings. That said, there are quite a few areas where the audio seems a bit hollow which holds it back a bit. The video is presented in anamorphic widescreen, and is where the major problem is. The lighting varies a little, which is to be expected with a movie shot so largely in the outdoors, but the bigger problem is the grain. There's often grain like one would expect with a shot on film movie, but it rarely has the depth of film and that gave Eden a very sloppy look to me. It comes across as overly soft and I noticed some frequent light ghosting and color lines around the lines in the presentation that seemed like poor authoring or perhaps trying to fit too much on one DVD and compressing the video too much more than anything. Although the audio is nicely done, the video is disappointing and held back the movie for me.
Music: There's a little nicely done music that often disappears after starting out with a nice audio balance.
Menus: The main menu works through a few non-anamorphic clips from the movie before settling in on a full screen still of Carmen with the style of the boxcover and a little minor animation. The chapter menu nicely lets you choose a scene based on a clip of each scene and the name of the girl(s) in it.

The Feature

This is a good final scene, but not the best in the movie.

Eden is a release I went into with fairly high expectations and came away from a bit disappointed. I know a lot of people are going to go into it comparing it to Digital Playground's Island Fever series, and although I really didn't want to do that going into this review it's something I not only don't think I can avoid doing, but also think is one of the best ways to looks at what's done right and wrong here. The biggest difference people will find between the two is that while the Island Fever series works on pure eye candy, Eden tries to be something more by bringing in a light Fantasy Island setup and format. This, combined with a running time of over three and a half hours, lets Eden feel like something much bigger than the Island Fever series and often works nicely to its advantage even though the plot sequences are very light and sometimes leave a bit to be desired (most of which comes out in the last half hour). It will also score a few points against the Island Fever series for many people because it has a lot of real audio through the movie (even though some of it is lost in the noise of the surf and nature) instead of slowing things down and just going with music throughout the entire movie. Where Eden stumbles in its race against the Island Fever series is the visuals. This is a great looking cast at a fantastic location and there's some nice expense put out there with things like the yacht fuck. At the same time the camera work often felt very limited and often left me wanting a different angle. This often came out to me in Daniel Dakota appearing to put the beauty of the cast in second place to the surroundings much of them time. He does a very nice job capturing the beauty of the beach, the surf, and the Hawaiian rainforest, but I popped Eden in to see some hot sex in nice locations not nice locations with titties hanging out in the background. If I wanted that I would have popped in a National Geographic DVD instead. Finally, and this for me was the biggest problem for me with Eden, is that it stumbles due to the video quality. Although it was shot in HD and is presented in anamorphic widescreen (which is great for a presentation like this), it often came across as being overly soft and a bit sloppy with light ghosting. I'm guessing that the video was compressed a bit too far fitting a movie lasting over three and a half hours in anamorphic widescreen and with two audio tracks on one DVD, especially with how much information has to be contained with the wild Hawaiian location, and because of it the video ended up suffering and holding back the entire presentation. Eden has a very nice idea and a great cast to build on a style that's been very well received elsewhere, but it falls short largely due to the camera work and video quality and ends up feeling like it might be slightly beyond Daniel Dakota's skills.

The Extra Stuff

Adam & Eve put some nice effort into the extras here and includes a second DVD for them. To start with, there's a full trailer and a teaser trailer for Eden as well as trailers for Fetish Dolls, A Slice of Pie, Dark Confessions, Big City Nights, The Devil Wears Leather, and Rawditions. The photo gallery lasts seven minutes with about six seconds annoyingly zooming in and out or panning around each very nice looking snapshot. I have this style and killed the photo gallery as soon as possible because of it. There are also interviews, auditions, a blooper reel, a behind the scenes featurette, and some of the usual weblinks and commercial crap.
A collection of some of the auditions for the movie lasts just over five minutes and is presented in anamorphic widescreen. You get to see a few lesser known brunettes try out who get rejected for things like not having perky enough nipples, being too happy, and having horses hate them as well as a dirty blonde who wears too much green. You also get to see some more recognizable stars such as Sunny Lane, Ana Nova, and Audrey Bitoni before Xavier gets hired for seeming like a nice guy. Of course, you get a bit of eye candy as well as the girls pose for their audition stills. This is a nice little featurette. There's a bit of humor with some of the rejections and it mixes things up well. This is a fun little extra.

The blooper reel lasts twelve and three quarter minutes and is nicely presented in anamorphic widescreen. After a piercing malfunction between Courtney and Carmen, Evan has a little fun with Tommy during the final scene with Courtney. There's also plenty of flubbed lines from around the movie. This is a fun little blooper reel that adds nicely to the overall package.

Just under thirteen minutes of interviews are included, which are also presented in anamorphic widescreen. Daniel Dakota starts it off talking about the story for the movie, going to Hawaii, and some of his movie influences. He also talks about some of his growth with Adam & Eve and having a major budget before Carmen and Courtney talk about their roles and Hawaii. Tommy also chats about his role and Hawaii as well as how he gets in character and working with Courtney. There's even an attempt at an interview with Evan, which of course goes far off course talking about his role, the job, and fish. This is a nice collection of interviews that adds nicely to the overall packaged. You get a look at most of the crew as well as director Daniel Dakota, and it nicely mixes personality with fun. If you're fans of the cast this featurette is worth checking out.

The behind the scenes featurette lasts nearly sixteen minutes and is presented in anamorphic widescreen. After a few words with Jean about working in Hawaii, Courtney shows off her southern girl outfit and chats about the location, being a Zero Tolerance contract girl, and being more than familiar with horses. Carmen chats next about her scene with Courtney and being excited to work with her before Evan talks about all the civilians around. Daniel talks a little about the challenges of shooting on the beach and how happy he is with how things are going. Bree gives a little rundown of how her threesome with Tommy and Jean went with plenty of enthusiasm before Carmen chats a little more about working for Adam & Eve. Things return to Evan Stone getting his hair braided and talking about things going on around the shoot before going out on the water hunting for sea pussy. This is an okay behind the scenes featurette. There's some decent personality and laughs, but for a movie that lasts over three and a half hours a featurette that barely lasts fifteen minutes seems like a drop in the bucket to what it should have been, especially when there's more than enough room on the DVD for a much larger featurette. On a two or two and a half hour movie this would have been a good featurette, but for one of the magnitude and length of Eden it just doesn't feel like too much even with Evan Stone's always amusing antics.

Bonus Scene – Lauren Phoenix and Randy Spears

Currently, Eden can be found online from around $33 to well over $50 with many stores offering it for a little under $40. Rent this one before you buy it or aim low. It's not bad, but also not worth the big bucks that it's going for. The sex is above average while the technical aspects are pretty average. There's some good effort put into the extras, but it's far from a full second disc worth of extras. This is a decent release, but it just doesn't seem worth the hype.

Note to Adam & Eve: Please watch your video quality. With movies like this when the quality drops like it did here it holds back the movie a lot more than some of the lighter porn fare you frequently put out.

A good amount of extras were on this release, with a full second DVD full of them. There was 15 minutes of behind the scene and interviews, both of which were ruled by Even Stone. The guy is simply hilarious! In addition, there was some footage of some of the girls who didn't make the cut for the movie, and for the life of my I can't figure out why Sunny Lane wasn't chosen... Also, there were 12 minutes of bloopers that were nice. On top of that, we got some trailers and teasers for Eden, which I'm not sure on the value of these, but anyway, there was also a photo gallery and a bonus scene with Randy Spears and Lauren Phoenix (from "e;At Your Service"e;). Unfortunately the video quality on the bonus scene wasn't so good. Then there were the plethora of trailers.
